Abstract

VIEDMA, Celeste. Defeat, Politics and Theory in Latin America: (Re)readings. Perf. latinoam. [online]. 2025, vol.33, n.65, pp.103-126.  Epub May 27, 2025. ISSN 0188-7653.  https://doi.org/10.18504/pl3365-005-2025.

The article aims to read the production of several Latin American intellectuals on Salvador Allende’s government defeat. Taking Carlos Matus as a triggering case, it analyzes the way in which “self-criticism” forges a series of evidences about the defeat that contrasts with the readings produced by authors such as Norbert Lechner, Ruy Mauro Marini, and René Zavaleta Mercado, among others. It illustrates the aspects in which they enable another political reading of the defeat and a theoretical reflection concerning the Marxian topic.

Keywords : Unidad Popular; Allende; marxism; military coup; dictatorship; self-criticism; transition to socialism; superstructure.
