Abstract

INIGUEZ MENDOZA, Ulises. Feligreses y párrocos en el arzobispado de México, 1874-1876: entre la lealtad y el repudio. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2016, n.12. ISSN 2007-4964.

This article examines the relations and conflicts between various indigenous parishes and their parish priests in the Archbishopric of Mexico in the period when the Reform Laws (Leyes de Reforma) achieved constitutional status under President Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada with Archbishop Labastida leading the Archbishopric of Mexico. The analysis highlights the passionate participation of congregations as they sought to influence the designation of local priests, and the often irreconcilable postures of antagonistic groups of believers regarding the kinds of priests they required. Two especially significant factors were ethnic issues and differing political orientations during a period in Mexican history characterized by clashes between secularizing processes and traditionalist and pre-reformist mentalities. Catholics, meanwhile, perceived an additional source of conflict: Protestantism, for at the time a distinct meaning of the term Protestant was emerging; one that became confused with the strictly religious sense of the word. One important contribution of this research is that it illustrates how parish-level disputes took the form of a triangle with the clergy, parishioners and some lesser civil functionaries at its three angles; a configuration that seems to belie the liberal objective of cementing the separation of Church and State.

Keywords : indigenous parishes; Archbishopric of Mexico; Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada; clergy-congregation relations.
