Abstract

RANGEL TORRES, Gilberto  and  TERAN GILMORE, Amador. Efecto de la losa en las propiedades estructurales y el desempeño sísmico de marcos de concreto reforzado. Concr. cem. investig. desarro [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.2, pp.2-16. ISSN 2007-3011.

During recent decades the importance of considering the interaction between the slab and the beams during the seismic design of ductile reinforced concrete frames has been identified. The use of a capacity design approach allows for an explicit consideration of the effect that the slab has on the flexural strength of the beams, in order to avoid undesirable failure modes due to excessive shear in the beams, strong beam-weak column mechanisms, and shear in beam-column connections. Nevertheless, this is not sufficient, because through its interaction with the beams, the slabs increase the lateral strength and lateral stiffness of a structure, while reducing its lateral deformation and energy dissipating capacities. Therefore, it is necessary to study how the story slabs should be modeled during the analysis of earthquake-resistant 2 structures. This paper studies the influence of the slabs on the structural properties and seismic performance of ductile reinforced concrete frames located in the Lake Zone of Mexico City. The effect of the slabs significantly depends on the sizes and longitudinal reinforcement of the beams of the frames. Particularly, this effect is significant for structures that have small beams with light longitudinal reinforcement.
