El periplo sustentable

Increasing tourism in Mexico through the diversification of more and new markets requires not only to find the most attractive natural and cultural sites but also studying the socio-economic and environmental conditions of the sites where intends to constant flow of visitors arriving. What is more, in any sustainable tourism development project it is very important to consider the position of local people in order to design the best strategies. This paper shows in detail the activities that were carried out to reveal the touristic dynamic in the 32 municipalities located in the Mexican Southwest Pacific coastline; the results allowed to identify spaces in which it is possible to establish the basis of a sustainable tourism. To date, a lot of work has been done in four local unions whose members designed their own specific goals and, in collaboration with municipal authorities, environmental agencies and tourist organisms, decided to promote this type of tourism in their communities.
