Abstract

RODRIGUEZ BALAM, Enrique. Choles, Mayas and Mestizos in Southern Yucatán. Península [online]. 2013, vol.8, n.2, pp.65-85. ISSN 1870-5766.

The aim of this paper is to propose an approach to the study of the interaction between Mayans, Choles and Mestizos. Based on the above, it also seeks to further discussion on the issue of interethnic relationships in Yucatan. In order to achieve this purpose, we review the way in which some disciplines have privileged aspects as beliefs, dress, customs and language, while fundamental markers to consider the Mayans as subjects belonging to a homogeneous cultural region. In this sense, the presence of Choles groups in southern Yucatan becomes a relevant social phenomenon to the discussion of cultural transformations in this part of Yucatan. Thus, the information field shows the way in which Choles, Mayans and Mestizos, despite sharing ethnic contexts and natural tensions, reconstruct cultural aspects such as beliefs, economy and labour, in a constant exchange of knowledge.

Keywords : mayans; mestizos; inter ethnic relations; migration and territory.
