Abstract

CANTO SAENZ, Rodolfo. Libertad y diferencia: la contribución del liberalismo igualitario al pensamiento democrático. CONfines relacion. internaci. ciencia política [online]. 2015, vol.11, n.21, pp.39-61. ISSN 1870-3569.

The work of John Rawls attempts to provide a moral foundation to liberalism, which it lacked of since the writings of John Locke. This paper reflects on a reformed liberalism which includes redistributive public policies in favor of disadvantages individuals in society and on its feasibility, with a reference to the Latin American context. Justice as fairness offers an ideal egalitarian society that promotes fair equality of opportunity, ensuring that socioeconomic differences benefit the least advantaged, and also guarantees basic freedoms to all citizens; this ideal retains all of its transformative potential in Latin America. Rawls proposal is of utmost importance in a world in which liberal thought is still hegemonic.

Keywords : Liberalism; democracy; equality; justice; public policy in Latin America.
