A study on the fundamental characteristics, basic parameters, and some applications of permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motors (PMa-SynRM), controlled by variable frequency drives (AFV) for centrifugal loads, is presented. This system facilitates savings. PMa-SynRM (considering different types of magnets), synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) and induction motors (IM) were compared, assessing advantages and limitations of the first. The study starts with a basic explanation of the SynRM because otherwise, the understanding of the PMa-SynRM may be difficult. The theoretical analysis of the PMa-SynRM was complemented with a comparison at constant current of the three systems, making clear the advantages of this machine in power factor, torque and output power in rated conditions. It was found that the studied motor ripple torque is higher than that of the SynRM, but is less than in the case of the IM. Using literature values and authors calculations, AFV-SynRM was compared with AFV-PMa-SynRM (using rare earth and ferrite magnets). The advantages of the AFV-PMa-SynRM in efficiency, power factor and torque was made clear. A case study in an enterprise of the replacement of an AFV-IM by an AFV-PMa-SynRM was elaborated. It was demonstrated by employing discount technics, the remarkable economic advantage of the last one, given basically by the smaller AFV required.
