Abstract
DUHAU, Emilio. La megaciudad en el siglo XXI: De la modernidad inconclusa a la crisis del espacio público. Pap. poblac [online]. 2001, vol.7, n.30, pp.131-161. ISSN 2448-7147.
This paper addresses the issue of public space in great Latin American metropolis, as a specific form of the crisis of modern urban arder. To this regard, the author states that in those metropolis this crisis, on one hand, combines the limits faced by the social, economic, political and urban model of population integration prevailing until the seventies of the XX century (unfinished modernity), with the social an urban effects of the political-economy of our rather peripherical globalization. But, on the other hand, it shows, as the Brazilian anthropologist Teresa Cal de ira has recently pointed out, a disjunction between a process of political democratization and the building of walled cities. This latter, is explored in the paper, taking as main concern the case of Mexico city, as a process consisting in a material and simbolic strengthening of social unequalities and the planified organization of urban segregation, as perverse ways of confronting the colapse of the civic and statutory urban order.
