Abstract

GUERRERO DE LIZARDI, Carlos. Measurement biases in the Mexican consumer price index, 2002-2007. Inv. Econ [online]. 2008, vol.67, n.266, pp.37-65. ISSN 0185-1667.

Using to some extent the approach proposed by Diewert (1998), we estimate upper substitution, outlet substitution, and quality change biases of the Mexican consumer price index between 2002 and 2007. Our main result suggests an upward bias around 0.5% on average per year. Because of the lack of information, we can not estimate lower substitution, and new models and new products biases. In this sense, the proposed figure is conservative.

Keywords : measurement biases; consumer price index.
