Abstract

CRESPO, Carolina. Memorias de silencios en el marco de reclamos étnico-territoriales. Experiencias de despojo y violencia en la primera mitad del siglo XX en el Parque Nacional Lago Puelo (Patagonia, Argentina). Cuicuilco [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.61, pp.165-187. ISSN 0185-1659.

Under the context of ethno-territorial claims, the Cayún Mapuche community of Lake Puelo -Chubut province, Patagonia, Argentina- has been publicly spreading certain memories that had been silenced not only from an official viewpoint and also in the state archives, but also, as a result of subordination experiences, and had thus barely been transmitted even within their homes. This paper examines -through a perspective that combines ethnography with official written historical sources- these memories that had remained silenced and untold, though maintained in the private-family sphere and are currently only limitedly registered in the state's administrative agencies, within the processes of the indigenous land claims. My purpose is to reflect on how "memories of silences" are inscribed on experiences, relationships and the domains of indigenous subjectivity; the way that memories and silences are managed between sectors that have been "sub-othered" and "othered", the force fields and social conditions associated with their production, and the role of memories and silences in the current context of territorial claims.

Keywords : Memories of dispossession; silences; territory; mapuches; Patagonia; Argentina.
