Abstract

RIVERA-LOPEZ, E. Anayani et al. First record of the Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) in Zacatecas, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp.115-119. ISSN 1870-7459.

The Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) is a bird species belonging to the family Anatidae, restricted to North America; its recognized winter range in Mexico includes a strip of land c. 50 km south of the US-Mexico border, in the states of Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, being considered as vagrant in the rest of the country. Here we report the first record of this species for the state of Zacatecas. While the Hooded Merganser has been recorded previously in areas nearby, this is the first record within the boundaries of Zacatecas, increasing the checklist of confirmed bird species for this state and the potential area where this species can be found in Mexico.

Keywords : Anatidae; distribution area; eBird; GBIF; Mexico; new record.
