Abstract

BAUTISTA SANTIAGO, Norma Angélica. Media landscapes of the Oaxacan Mixteca: images for an ethnic future. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.85, pp.137-163.  Epub June 05, 2023. ISSN 2448-8488.

Linking anthropology and mass media is relevant in the approach to contemporary societies, and if attention is also paid to the futures of indigenous cultures, this link allows to outline frameworks of reflection that can be useful to know how the time to come is being built in these cultures that resist the onslaught of modern globalization. This text shows how the presence of Oaxacan Mixtecs in the mass media, the internet and social networks produces diverse representations of contemporary Oaxacan Mixtecs, their aspirations and the actions they have undertaken to influence the construction of the futures they imagine in relation to their language and culture. These representations are characterized as “media landscapes from below”, because they disseminate emic images of the current Mixtec world, which account for the present of the Ñuu Savi or People of the Rain and the possibilities of revitalizing and keeping their language, traditions and culture alive in today’s world.

Keywords : media landscape; anthropology of the future; mass media; social networks; Mixtec virtual community.
