Abstract
BARRIOS BUSTAMANTE, Angélica de las Nieves and CHIQUETE BELTRAN, José Daniel. UNDERSTANDING MODERNITY IN NINETEENTH CENTURY MEXICAN PROTESTANTISM EXPRESSED IN TWO EMBLEMATIC NEWSPAPERS. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2022, n.75, pp.89-118. Epub Aug 08, 2022. ISSN 2007-963X.
This article analyzes the understanding of modernity by the first Mexican Protestants and how it was expressed in two emblematic publications, the Methodist/ El Abogado Cristiano Ilustrado/ and the Presbyterian/ El Faro. The 30-year period known as the Porfiriato coincided with the initial phase of Protestant presence in the country and required constant interaction with its ideas and policies. After describing the concept of modernity in the general realm of ideas of that period —with special references to Liberalism, Positivism, and Catholicism— we analyze Protestant contributions to the idea of modernity and their discussion and transmission in Protestant periodicals; and we consider the general conditions that made this discourse possible considering the historical context in which it arose.
Keywords : modernity; protestant press; Mexico; 19th Century.
