Abstract

MARTINEZ, Nain; BRENNER, Ludger  and  ESPEJEL, Ileana. Red de participación institucional en las áreas naturales protegidas de la península de Baja California. Región y sociedad [online]. 2015, vol.27, n.62, pp.27-62. ISSN 2448-4849.

An analysis of the governance of protected areas in the Baja California peninsula was conducted through the network participation of social stakeholders in the period 2007-2011. Using the methodology of social network analysis, we found that the network was expanded and participation diversified. Additionally, the network showed a strengthening of regional scale management, and greater social inclusion of different stakeholders in the use of resources and environmental conservation. However, participants' impact on the network varies. For example, while government agencies, academic institutions and nonprofit organizations increased their influence, the participation of community and private actors was limited. Therefore, more research on improving governance and participation mechanisms is needed.

Keywords : participation; conservation policy; protected areas; social network analysis; Mexico.
