Abstract
LEON-DE LA LUZ, José Luis; MEDEL-NARVAEZ, Alfonso and DOMINGUEZ-CADENA, Raymundo. A new Commelina (Commelinacea) from Baja California Sur, Mexico. Rev. Mex. Biodiv. [online]. 2019, vol.90, e902823. Epub June 31, 2019. ISSN 2007-8706. https://doi.org/10.22201/ib.20078706e.2019.90.2823.
In this work, Commelina rebmanii León-de la Luz is described and illustrated, the new species grows naturally in the coastal environment of southern Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is found only in 2 locations: the sand dunes of Punta Arena del Sur and the beach north of Cabo San Lucas. A closely related species seems to be Commelina erecta, widely distributed in America, from which it differs because of its smaller size of the spathe-like bracts and petals, as well, has a geniculate style with 1 or 2 curls, and additionally they occupy very distinct habitats. The species is endangered due to human disturbance in a wide geographic area.
