The oregano is a non-wood forest product that it is found wild in various parts of Mexico. It is used as a condiment, decorative plant, for its essence and in the production of essential oils. Two genera of great commercial value can be found in the state of Nuevo León: Lippia (Verbenaceae) and Poliomintha (Lamiaceae). The objective of this study was to generate dynamic information about the taxonomy and geographical distribution of the oregano species in the state as well as to correctly define the different species found in Nuevo León. To archive this, exploratory visits and sampling of specimens were carried out in various municipalities; in addition, we consulted the specimens of oregano stored in the UNL, ANSM and CFUL herbariums. Four different species of oregano were found in the state: L. graveolens (Verbenaceae) the species with the widest distribution was confirmed in 26 of the municipalities (Agualeguas, Anahuac, Bustamante, Cerralvo, Doctor González, General Bravo, General Terán, General Zaragoza, General Zuazua, Lampazos de Naranjo, Linares, Los Herrera, Los Ramones, Melchor Ocampo, Mina, Montemorelos, Monterrey, Parás, Sabinas Hidalgo, Salinas Victoria, San Pedro Garza García, Santa Catarina, Vallecillo, Villaldama and Rayones); additionally, the presence of tree species of Lamiaceae were corroborated, these were: P. bustamanta, found in Bustamante and Higueras; P. dendritica found only in Bustamante, and P. longiflora in the municipalities of Allende, Aramberri, Doctor Arroyo, Galeana, Higueras, Linares, Monterrey and Villa de Santiago.
