Abstract

CORTES, Alexis. The Touraine Boys and the pobladores’ impossible social movement. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2022, vol.84, n.2, pp.477-506.  Epub May 09, 2022. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2022.2.60285.

In the twilight of the Chilean dictator-ship (1985-1986), when the form of transition to democracy was being defined, a group of researchers applied Alain Touraine’s methodology of sociological intervention to the pobladores’ movement. Their conclusion that the pobladores were not a social movement but an impos-sible social movement could have contributed to consolidate a negotiated form of democratization that excluded social actors like the pobladores. Applying the concept of social science’s performativity, this paper investigates to what extent sociology helped establish the coordinates that oriented Chile’s transition to democracy.

Keywords : performativity; sociological intervention; Alain Touraine; pobladores’ movement; social movements; democratization.
