Abstract

DIAZ CAMARENA, Armando Javier. Sexual education in classrooms: Laicity as a practice. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2022, vol.84, n.2, pp.447-475.  Epub May 09, 2022. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2022.2.60284.

The officially approved contents on sexual education for middle school in Mexico are ruled by the laicity principle. However, their delivery in classrooms is shaped by values and beliefs of religious origin that configure the faculty’s subjectivity and their limited ability to manage tensions within the school community. Through interviews and classroom observation, the author documented the discourses and practices of teachers and students that give meaning to such contents and incorporate regulations circumscribed by the Judeo-Christian morality. This regularly co-exists with discursive practices that integrate laicity principles and expressions of resistance that transform the “legitimate” sexual order.

Keywords : laicity; sexual education; curriculum; discourses.
