Abstract

GARCIA GARCIA, José Luís. Towards a truly analytical chemical equilibrium. Educ. quím [online]. 2021, vol.32, n.1, pp.133-146.  Epub Aug 13, 2021. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2021.1.75075.

Chemical equilibrium is a topic of considerable difficulty at a mathematical level. In this paper, we propose that, the extent of reaction concept can be used to model it, allowing a clear distinction of the equilibrium parameter from the non-equilibrium parameter, and how this technique allows us to deduce universal equations to analyze highly common situations in the chemistry laboratory such as pH calculations for acids and bases. We raise the possibility that subsequent situations such as titrations and solubility equilibrium can be modeled by means of this same technique, based on the extent of reaction concept.

Keywords : Chemical equilibrium; reaction progress; ICE table; common ion effect; Henderson-Hasselbach equation.
