Since 1981 the Chilean universities face the growing need to seek self-funding for their activities because the State has reduced drastically the direct financial resources that were allocated to the universities, and specially to the state universities, submitting the fiscal contributions through funds that are won by means of a competition or assigning them according to the compliance of several regional standards, forcing most of he universities to develop a model characterized by the opening of regional offices troughout the country as a self-funding strategy. The purpose of this article is to analyse the results obtained during the exploratory and descriptive interviews that were carried out to the principals of the different regional seats of the currently active universities in the Chilean city of Antofagasta, with regard to the perception and the presence of the concept of social university responsibility as one of the criteria to be taken into account in operating the regional offices as a strategy of self-funding.
