Abstract

REYNA, Marian  and  MANZANARES RUIZ, Martín. Marx by Day, Freud at Night. Herbert Marcuse’s Reception in Mexico (1963-1973). Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2022, n.spe2, pp.161-190.  Epub June 26, 2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2022.1e.77744.

This article explores the conditions of the reception and circulation of Herbert Marcuse’s ideas among Mexican university students. We propose that the reception of this German thinker’s work took place in an atmosphere of left-wing thought renewal and it was a reference for a young generation who devoted themselves to criticize the post-revolutionary Mexican regime, transform the traditional militancy model of the old communist parties and exalt the strength of “radical imagination”. The article also shows that this philosopher’s contributions influenced the Mexican psychoanalytic field in a climate of political and cultural effervescence.

Keywords : Herbert Marcuse; Mexico; New Left; psychoanalysis.
