Abstract

RABOTNIKOF, Nora. [The Concept, Lexicon and Political Experiences of Populism]. Diánoia [online]. 2018, vol.63, n.81, pp.3-22. ISSN 0185-2450.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iifs.18704913e.2018.81.1571.

Abstract: It is not easy to draw a sharp line between the uses of the term “populism” in specialized academic research and in political struggles. In the first part of my contribution I underline the complex theoretical status of “populism” as a political concept and the pejorative sense that has always seemed to be attached to it. In the second part I briefly sketch three political experiences which were labelled as “populist” in their day. Finally, I express my doubts regarding the efforts to revert the pejorative sense of the concept and its use to describe and evaluate in generally positive terms the innovative character of some recent political experiences in Latin America.

Keywords : action politics; popular sovereignty; narodnichestvo; Laclau; Trump.
