Abstract

OCANA RUIZ, Sonia I.. Nuevas reflexiones sobre las pinturas incrustadas de concha y el trabajo de Juan y Miguel González. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2013, vol.35, n.102, pp.125-176. ISSN 0185-1276.

On the basis of the little extant documentary information, this article discusses the participation of Miguel and Juan González-artists to whom numerous paintings with mother-of-pearl encrustation are attributed-in New Spain's guild of painters, as well as their relations with other members of the guild. e text deals with the alleged Asian origins of the technique as well as the chronology of production. Addressing a selection of these paintings, the article stresses the heterogeneity of these works and the diculty of ascertaining the authorship of numerous unsigned items, as well as the limitations faced by stylistic analysis in view of the stylistic and technical diversity of those works that are signed. Finally it points out that this production is the fruit of more hands than those of the González brothers and stresses its richness that merits further analysis.

Keywords : mother-of-pearñ encrusted paintings; Juan González; Miguel González.
