Resumen
LEMUS BARAHONA, Leslie y HERRERA, Cristina. Women in Construction Trades: Labor Market Incorporation in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico. Rev. interdiscip. estud. género Col. Méx. [online]. 2026, vol.12, e1297. Epub 11-Mayo-2026. ISSN 2395-9185. https://doi.org/10.24201/reg.v12i1.1297.
Construction activities have traditionally been considered masculine. However, since the late 1980s in Mexico City, women's participation in these tasks has been documented, although it was largely occasional and concentrated in periods of high labor demand, with women occupying the lowest positions within the labor hierarchy. Nearly four decades later, women are frequently observed in a wide range of trades within residential construction in Mexico City and its metropolitan area; in other words, their presence has become a constant feature. In this article, we analyze recent changes in the gender composition of the construction workforce at the national scale and, draw on a purposive sample of fifty interviews, present a preliminary analysis of the profiles of women construction workers in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico. These findings are part of a broader research project aimed at understanding the characteristics of women's incorporation process into the sector and examining how their presence has transformed labor market dynamics in this region.
