Abstract

TORRES CRUZ, César. The cisheterosexualization of biomedical care for human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer (Ceca) in Mexico. Debate fem. [online]. 2024, vol.67, pp.95-126.  Epub Mar 24, 2025. ISSN 2594-066X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cieg.2594066xe.2024.67.2448.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a high-impact Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI), meaning that most sexually active people will get it at some point in their lives. Biomedical care has focused on the causal relationship between HPV and cervical cancer (Ceca) to promote alternatives for cisgender women alone, which affects everyone. In this text, using gender and STS (Science, Technology and Society) studies, in conjunction with empirical findings from a review of international and local health documents, and interviews with key informants, I examine the way the cisheterosexualization of biomedicine operates in the care of these conditions in Mexico, by holding heterosexual cisgender women accountable, failing to provide care for heterosexual and non-hetero cisgender men, and invisibilizing lesbian cisgender women and trans people.

Keywords : HPV; Ceca; cisheterosexualization; biomedicine; sexuality; Mexico.
