Abstract

NOGALES HARO, Grace. From local bosses to businessmen: the conservative lag in the implementation of neoliberalism in Ecuador and Bolivia. Inter disciplina [online]. 2025, vol.13, n.36, pp.251-273.  Epub Oct 06, 2025. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2025.36.91381.

This paper presents a review of the democratic transition process and the implementation of the neoliberal model in Ecuador and Bolivia, with the aim of identifying the elements that led to the fracture of this project in barely two decades and to the opening of national re-foundation projects such as those led by AP in Ecuador and MAS in Bolivia. Considering the current situation, marked by political and social polarization in both countries, in the middle of which the traditional power groups are disputing the recovery of neoliberal hegemony, both inside and outside the government, this paper proposes the characterization of the sectors that led the neoliberal project in order to establish bridges to understand the current reflux of the right-wing in the Andean countries.

Keywords : neoliberalism; technocracy; Ecuador; Bolivia; democracy.
