This article contains reflections on the relationship between philosophy and theology (between historical materialism and redemption) in the "Theses on the Philosophy of History" by Walter Benjamin, specifically about the chessplayer automaton allegory in the first thesis. The ideology of progress is presented as the "opium" of historical materialism.
