Abstract

GARCIA-CRUZ, Alejandra. Social representations in running: The imagined bodies of men. Polis [online]. 2024, vol.20, n.1, pp.101-130.  Epub June 30, 2025. ISSN 2594-0686.  https://doi.org/10.24275/uam/izt/dcsh/polis/2024v20n1/garcia.

The objective of this article is to build some of the corporal representations of men that live in Mexico City who typically engage in running as a recreational activity or as a form of self-care, which is framed as part of the world of meaning of running. The article is structured into three sections. In the first section, I draw on interviews conducted with adult men to show their perceptions about men bodies, particularly in relation with their running practices. In the second section, I conceptualize these narratives as corporal representations and highlight three referents, one associated with the imposing; another named as slim or fitness, and another one related with a way of ensure well-being. Finally, in the third section, I recover de category of hegemonic masculinity to emphasize that representations of men´s bodies, such as the responses to hegemony, are relational and changing.

Keywords : body; representations; gender & masculinity.
