Abstract

DEPETRIS, Carolina. Insects in Yucatan Travel Literature: the Manuscript of Alice Dixon Le Plongeon (1884). Latinoamérica [online]. 2025, n.80, pp.197-222.  Epub Jan 12, 2026. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2025.80.57693.

This paper aims to examine the epistemological framework of cultural studies on the dominance and influence of European cultures in tropical America, focusing on the geography of Yucatan. The primary source for this examination will be an unpublished manuscript by the English traveler Alice Dixon Le Plongeon. This study aims to incorporate the insects mentioned in the text as an analysis element. Through literary and cultural analysis, the goal is to broaden the study of travel narratives beyond a purely human-centered approach and transcend the epistemological perspective of imperialist and orientalist premises that often shape the study of travel literature.
