Abstract

VERA, Cristina. Between expulsion and networks Memories of migrant working girls in Ecuador. Alteridades [online]. 2024, vol.34, n.68, pp.101-111.  Epub Oct 31, 2024. ISSN 2448-850X.  https://doi.org/10.24275/hwgp6289.

Drawing on testimonies about migratory labor, kinship, and organization experiences of Kichwa women from Cotacachi, Ecuador, I examine the social processes that facilitated the expulsion of girls for domestic work and the establishment of support networks. I rely on the childhood memories of these women, who were between 8 and 14 years old during the agrarian reforms of 1964 and 1973. The findings demonstrate how these women’s migration experiences to Quito were organized, marked not only by the domination and inequality of child domestic labor but also by horizontal care networks centered on work and friendship. The value of this text lies in its approach to the migratory experience from various realities of working childhood, in contexts of domination marked by racial, generational, and class inequalities, but also in situations of alliances and care.

Keywords : migratory experiences; domestic work; inequality; care.
