Abstract

WEGELIN, Lucía. Toward a Critical Theory of Social Prejudice. The Hostility toward Dependents in Contemporary Argentinean Society. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2025, vol.40, n.112, pp.113-146.  Epub Sep 05, 2025. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article proposes reconstructing the theory of prejudice explained by Theodor W. Adorno’s different studies about antisemitism, to, from there, look at specific discourses found during fieldwork about authoritarian ideologies in contemporary Argentinean society. After reviewing some theoretical dilemmas stemming from Adorno’s theory, the author analyzes the discourse of a series of focus groups held in Argentina between 2023 and 2024. The objective was to determine if this theory of prejudice is appropriate for interpreting hostility to certain stereotypical social figures, which focuses on local fieldwork, but which could be a way of subjectively working through the crisis of neoliberalism on a global level.

Keywords : prejudice; social authoritarianism; neoliberalism.
