Abstract

Epub June 26, 2025. ISSN 3061-8002.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.30618002e.2025.70.78731.

The Spaniards relied on the caciques to govern New Spain. The monarchy defended their authority, while reducing their prerogatives. To defend their power, which they felt was under threat, the caciques wrote numerous letters to the king, seeking recognition of their privileges and authority. We will be looking here at the way they addressed the sovereign and the writing devices they used to advance their cause, which reflect the way they saw themselves in the new colonial society.

Keywords : Cacique; letters; native languages; power; rhetoric; King of Spain.
