Abstract

ORTIZ MEDINA, Esteban. The Fundamentality Problem for Panpsychism. Crítica (Méx., D.F.) [online]. 2025, vol.57, n.169, pp.59-85.  Epub Aug 25, 2025. ISSN 0011-1503.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iifs.18704905e.2025.1649.

In this article I elaborate in detail the problem of fundamentality for panpsychism. I argue that, in light of three typical and recurring problems raised for panpsychism in the literature, the notion of fundamentality, essential to the formulation of the theory, becomes highly problematic. I then examine two problems of undecidability that derive from that notion: first, the inability to differentiate internally between different versions of panpsychism, and second, the difficulty to distinguish panpsychism externally from dualism and physicalism. I conclude with a comment on the modal status of panpsychism, raising questions about its viability and coherence.

Keywords : micropsychism; cosmopychism; fundamental level; dualism; physicalism.
