</front><body><![CDATA[ <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="4"><b>Presentaci&oacute;n</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Patricia Fournier Garc&iacute;a y Fernando L&oacute;pez Aguilar</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>Escuela Nacional de Antropolog&iacute;a e Historia</i></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">William Timothy Sanders (19 de abril de 1926), oriundo de Patchogue, Nueva York, fue el hijo mayor de una numerosa familia de clase trabajadora y limitados recursos econ&oacute;micos. Como alumno de bachillerato fue &aacute;vido lector del volumen de William H. Prescott acerca de la historia de la conquista de M&eacute;xico, que incorpora en la narrativa observaciones acerca de la antigua civilizaci&oacute;n mexica, obra que fue clave como motivaci&oacute;n para que Sanders se abocara apasionadamente al estudio de las culturas prehisp&aacute;nicas de Mesoam&eacute;rica. Despu&eacute;s de prestar servicio en la marina durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, como veterano de esa contienda, se hizo acreedor a los recursos monetarios requeridos para cursar estudios universitarios en Harvard, prestigiosa instituci&oacute;n donde obtuvo, en 1949, la licenciatura y, en 1957, el doctorado en antropolog&iacute;a &#91;Parsons, 2008&#93;.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En palabras de Michael D. Coe &#91;2008&#93;, compa&ntilde;ero universitario de Sanders en Harvard con quien mantuviera nexos personales y acad&eacute;micos por d&eacute;cadas, la obra <i>Principios de la Antropolog&iacute;a </i>de Chapple y Coon &#91;1948&#93; constituy&oacute; una fuerte influencia en las investigaciones de Sanders en Mesoam&eacute;rica en torno a la complejidad social y la adaptaci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica con bases materialistas. Esa tendencia se vio fortalecida, en 1951, cuando estudi&oacute; en la Escuela Nacional de Antropolog&iacute;a e Historia (ENAH) y tuvo la oportunidad de nutrirse con el pensamiento de Pedro Armillas acerca del an&aacute;lisis del paisaje y la agricultura chinampera de la cuenca de M&eacute;xico, adem&aacute;s de que fue su asistente de campo en Tabasco en 1953 &#91;Wendt, 2009&#93;. Gordon Willey, uno de sus profesores en Harvard, le inculc&oacute; a Sanders el inter&eacute;s por el estudio regional de patrones de asentamiento &#91;Toby Evans y Webster, 2008&#93; manifiesto en m&uacute;ltiples publicaciones.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Asimismo, desde la d&eacute;cada de los cincuenta, Sanders particip&oacute; en trabajos de campo en Morelos, Quintana Roo, Veracruz y Chiapas. A partir de 1960 dirigi&oacute; diversos proyectos arqueol&oacute;gicos en la cuenca de M&eacute;xico, que fue su principal inter&eacute;s hasta su deceso, Kaminaljuyu, Guatemala, Cop&aacute;n, Honduras y en el sitio de Pikillaqta en Per&uacute;, en este &uacute;ltimo caso gracias a una estancia de investigaci&oacute;n auspiciada por el sistema Fullbright en 1964 &#91;Parsons, <i>op. cit.&#93;.</i></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La trayectoria de Sanders fue consistente a lo largo de su vida en los marcos de la ecolog&iacute;a cultural y el materialismo cultural, sustento de sus prol&iacute;ficas contribuciones centradas en la evoluci&oacute;n de Mesoam&eacute;rica desde la etapa de cazadores&#150;recolectores hasta el desarrollo de estados urbanos complejos; tal nivel de complejidad, desde su perspectiva, result&oacute; del crecimiento demogr&aacute;fico como principal motor y est&iacute;mulo. Para el caso del centro de M&eacute;xico, en los estudios que llev&oacute; a cabo en conjunto con colaboradores de la talla de Barbara Price, Jeffrey R. Parsons y Robert S. Santley, fundament&oacute; que debido a la gran variabilidad regional en el clima, suelos, productividad y poblaci&oacute;n, hab&iacute;a ocurrido un proceso de aglutinaci&oacute;n en una extensa regi&oacute;n simbi&oacute;tica, es decir, la cuenca de M&eacute;xico y zonas circunvecinas que propici&oacute; el surgimiento de sociedades complejas y del urbanismo &#91;v. <body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">De hecho, como se&ntilde;ala Michael E. Smith &#91;2008&#93;, el libro <i>Mesoamerica: The Evolution of a Civilization </i>&#91;Sanders y Price, 1968&#93; fue clave para el establecimiento de un marco cient&iacute;fico comparativo para el estudio del pasado mesoamericano, mientras que para quienes realizan investigaciones en la cuenca de M&eacute;xico, la obra de Sanders, Parsons y Santley &#91;1979&#93; titulada <i>The Basin of Mexico: Ecological Processes in the Evolution of a Civilization </i>es de consulta y uso imprescindibles.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Sanders combin&oacute; la arqueolog&iacute;a, etnolog&iacute;a, etnohistoria y la investigaci&oacute;n documental con los reconocimientos de superficie y las excavaciones controladas, por ejemplo, para el estudio de unidades residenciales en la b&uacute;squeda de similitudes y diferencias, as&iacute; como para la conformaci&oacute;n de secuencias temporales, por lo general mediante an&aacute;lisis estratigr&aacute;ficos y de materiales cer&aacute;micos &#91;Kolb, 2008&#93;. Incluso, podr&iacute;amos considerar que, a su manera, Sanders efectu&oacute; trabajos con un cariz propio de la etnoarqueolog&iacute;a y de la arqueolog&iacute;a hist&oacute;rica como estrategias de investigaci&oacute;n, aun cuando desde su perspectiva no recurriera al uso de esas etiquetas.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Como profesor&#150;investigador, Sanders tuvo una brillante carrera en la Universidad Estatal de Pennsylvania (Penn State) entre 1959 y 1993 cuando se jubil&oacute;, si bien continu&oacute; sus labores acad&eacute;micas como profesor em&eacute;rito hasta su fallecimiento el 2 de julio de 2008, adem&aacute;s de que prosigui&oacute; supervisando trabajos tanto de campo como de gabinete y prepar&oacute; m&uacute;ltiples publicaciones, algunas de la cuales desafortunadamente ser&aacute;n p&oacute;stumas.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En varias ocasiones se hizo merecedor de financiamientos de investigaci&oacute;n de distintas fuentes, adem&aacute;s de que fue laureado por sus logros, caso de la medalla "Alfred Vincent Kidder" al m&eacute;rito acad&eacute;mico en arqueolog&iacute;a americana que recibi&oacute; de la American Anthropological Association en 1980 &#91;Kolb, <i>op. cit.&#93;, </i>su designaci&oacute;n como Profesor Em&eacute;rito en Antropolog&iacute;a "Evan Pugh", en 1983, que es la mayor distinci&oacute;n que otorga la universidad Penn State, su incorporaci&oacute;n, en 1985, a la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos &#91;Parsons, <i>op. cit.; </i>Toby Evans y Webster, <i>op. cit.&#93;, </i>as&iacute; como el homenaje que se le rindi&oacute; en M&eacute;xico a ra&iacute;z de su jubilaci&oacute;n que motiv&oacute; el compendio de dos vol&uacute;menes &#91;Mastache <i>et al. </i>1996&#93;.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Cabe destacar que entre 1973 y 1976, como profesor visitante &#91;Toby Evans y Webster, <i>op. cit.&#93;, </i>Sanders particip&oacute; activamente en la formaci&oacute;n de estudiantes de la ENAH, tanto en aula como en campo, de manera que incidi&oacute; en la diseminaci&oacute;n de la posici&oacute;n te&oacute;rica de la Ecolog&iacute;a Cultural entre varios alumnos, quienes ulteriormente se integraron a la vida profesional y acad&eacute;mica en nuestro pa&iacute;s, dejando una huella que persiste hasta nuestros d&iacute;as en la forma de hacer arqueolog&iacute;a mesoamericana en M&eacute;xico. Independientemente de las pol&eacute;micas que se han suscitado en nuestro &aacute;mbito acad&eacute;mico por el uso, en ocasiones acr&iacute;tico, de la Ecolog&iacute;a Cultural, as&iacute; como las mismas bases inferenciales de Sanders para dar cuenta de la complejidad social precolombina, la obra de este investigador que aqu&iacute; compendiamos en las referencias &#151;sea de su autor&iacute;a, coautor&iacute;a o que saliera a la luz bajo su coordinaci&oacute;n&#151; contin&uacute;a siendo fuente indispensable de consulta ante el c&uacute;mulo de datos que se incluyen, derivados de rigurosos trabajos de campo y gabinete.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Era de llamar la atenci&oacute;n la fortaleza de Sanders, ya sexagenario, y as&iacute; se mantuvo, a nuestro parecer, despu&eacute;s de cumplir 77 a&ntilde;os de edad. Como escucha, ponente o comentarista siempre se mostraba atento, interesado, participativo y cr&iacute;tico en foros estadounidenses como la reuni&oacute;n anual de la Society for American Archaeology, a la cual rara vez faltaba; igualmente se le ve&iacute;a en eventos realizados en M&eacute;xico, como la reuni&oacute;n de la Sociedad Mexicana de Antropolog&iacute;a, la serie de mesas redondas de Teotihuacan y en plataformas de discusi&oacute;n como el Taller&#150;Seminario El fen&oacute;meno Coyotlatelco en el centro de M&eacute;xico: Tiempo, espacio y significado, que se llev&oacute; a cabo en el Museo de las Culturas del INAH en agosto de 2004. Su actitud fuera de los formalismos de las sesiones acad&eacute;micas siempre fue afable, amable y su generosidad sin par hacia estudiantes y colegas de todos los grupos de edad; aunque era un investigador de firmes convicciones te&oacute;ricas y tono firme al respecto, nuestra experiencia es que siempre estuvo abierto a escuchar opiniones que, en m&aacute;s de una ocasi&oacute;n, lo llevaron a reflexionar acerca de lo que se le planteaba.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Por &uacute;ltimo, cabe recalcar que independientemente del inter&eacute;s Sanders en diversas &aacute;reas de M&eacute;xico y Centroam&eacute;rica, la regi&oacute;n simbi&oacute;tica de la cuenca de M&eacute;xico y, en particular, el Valle de Teotihuacan fueron de vital relevancia en su prolongada y fruct&iacute;fera trayectoria acad&eacute;mica, una pasi&oacute;n que nunca abandon&oacute; este tit&aacute;n de la arqueolog&iacute;a mesoamericana.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Como parte del homenaje p&oacute;stumo que el Posgrado en Arqueolog&iacute;a de la ENAH hizo al doctor William T. Sanders los d&iacute;as 28 al 30 de julio de 2009, destacamos este grupo de trabajos del conjunto de ponencias y conferencias que se presentaron, ya que muestran el impacto que han tenido y tienen las ideas de este prominente arque&oacute;logo en la investigaci&oacute;n arqueol&oacute;gica mexicana, y que abarcan las investigaciones que en ese campo disciplinar han sido realizadas tanto por sus colaboradores como por sus disc&iacute;pulos directos o indirectos en el Altiplano Central Mesoamericano, en especial las regiones sur, norte y noreste de la cuenca de M&eacute;xico, en el valle de Toluca y en el Valle del Mezquital para los horizontes Precl&aacute;sico, Cl&aacute;sico y Postcl&aacute;sico.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Mari Carmen Serra Puche y Carlos Lazcano nos expresan c&oacute;mo el sur de la cuenca de M&eacute;xico puede ser visto como una regi&oacute;n con fuertes interacciones entre los grupos humanos con diversa organizaci&oacute;n social y, entre ellos, el medio ambiente. Los estudios realizados permiten entender las din&aacute;micas de cambio y sugerir l&iacute;neas de investigaci&oacute;n que pudieran dar continuidad al trabajo iniciado por William T. Sanders.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Thomas H. Charlton y Cynthia L. Otis Charlton exponen su asociaci&oacute;n intelectual con William Sanders a partir de las exploraciones arqueol&oacute;gicas del <i>Proyecto Valle de Teotihuac&aacute;n </i>de 1963 y el conjunto de preguntas que gener&oacute; esta interacci&oacute;n a lo largo de cuarenta y cinco a&ntilde;os. Las investigaciones recientes, llevadas a cabo en la parte oriental del Valle de Teotihuacan, tienen que ver con la definici&oacute;n de los conjuntos residenciales teotihuacanos en &aacute;reas fuera de la ciudad, los cuales, de presentarse como unidades dom&eacute;sticas de familias nucleares (como la azteca), permitir&iacute;an reconsiderar las relaciones socioecon&oacute;micas entre la metr&oacute;poli y su &aacute;rea rural.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Elizabeth Brumfiel destaca, en el trabajo que incluimos aqu&iacute;, que William Sanders condujo sus investigaciones hacia la comprensi&oacute;n de la gente com&uacute;n, el grupo poblacional que sustentaba a las &eacute;lites del poder prehisp&aacute;nico. Ella, continuando con este tipo de orientaciones de investigaci&oacute;n, busca resolver, desde el asentamiento de Xaltocan del Poscl&aacute;sico de la cuenca de M&eacute;xico, si la gente com&uacute;n se benefici&oacute; con la hegemon&iacute;a azteca impulsando la especializaci&oacute;n y la diversificaci&oacute;n para as&iacute; elevar sus est&aacute;ndares de vida, y si este mismo conjunto de la poblaci&oacute;n contribuy&oacute; con ideas e innovaciones al desarrollo del Poscl&aacute;sico. Para resolver estos dilemas, su estudio de Xaltocan se enfoca en el an&aacute;lisis de las unidades habitacionales.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Por su parte, Yoko Sugiura subraya la importancia que tuvo la arqueolog&iacute;a regional, a partir de la d&eacute;cada de los a&ntilde;os sesenta del siglo pasado, para describir y explicar los patrones de asentamiento y la evoluci&oacute;n sociopol&iacute;tica de los grupos prehisp&aacute;nicos. La investigaci&oacute;n de esta autora se relaciona con la problem&aacute;tica del trabajo de superficie en el valle de Toluca vinculada con la comprensi&oacute;n de la historia poblacional de esa regi&oacute;n, desde el formativo hasta la segunda mitad del siglo xv.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Fernando L&oacute;pez Aguilar y Patricia Fournier han aplicado el enfoque y el modelo metodol&oacute;gico de William Sanders en el Valle del Mezquital, lo que les ha permitido conocer algunas din&aacute;micas socioculturales y el tipo de poblaci&oacute;n que ocup&oacute; la regi&oacute;n desde el Precl&aacute;sico hasta el Poscl&aacute;sico Tard&iacute;o en la b&uacute;squeda de la presencia y la profundidad hist&oacute;rica del grupo etnobiol&oacute;gico otom&iacute;. En este trabajo reflexionan no s&oacute;lo sobre las din&aacute;micas poblacionales, sino tambi&eacute;n sobre el tipo de interacciones que pudieron tener los diversos grupos que ocuparon esa regi&oacute;n y las consecuencias que pudo haber tenido para que, en el Poscl&aacute;sico Tard&iacute;o, se expresara como una localidad densamente poblada.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Finalmente, Manuel G&aacute;ndara realiza un recorrido acerca de las razones personales que han motivado su preocupaci&oacute;n por la refutaci&oacute;n de teor&iacute;as y su obsesi&oacute;n por tratar de demostrar que la teor&iacute;a sobre el origen del Estado, publicada en <i>The Basin of Mexico, </i>no s&oacute;lo no ha sido refutada, sino que era la mejor en la d&eacute;cada de los a&ntilde;os ochenta.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Bibliograf&iacute;a</b></font></p>     <!-- ref --><p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Baker, Paul y William T.
