Abstract

GARCIA GARCIA, Ana María del Socorro  and  ARCOS CHIGO, Julieta. Veracruz, reading book: Ideological Instrument and Didactic Tool of the “Popular Education” Project, 1919-1932. Debates hist. [online]. 2021, vol.9, n.1, pp.105-128.  Epub June 20, 2022. ISSN 2594-2956.  https://doi.org/10.54167/debates-por-la-historia.v9i1.749.

This article examines the didactic and political functions of the textbook “Veracruz. Reading book”. This textbook was published within the public policy known as “Popular Education”. The policy was part of the nation project launched by the Carrancistas and the Sonora group which made up the constitutionalist faction of the Mexican Revolution. The analysis of a school text like “Veracruz. Reading Book”, allows exploring the possibilities offered by a novel source to study transcendent socio-historical processes such as the educational reform. A reform that led to pedagogical innovations, political changes and ideological debates. The purpose of this research, considering the aforementioned textbook, focuses on an often-overlooked topic in the local historiography of education which has been the constitutionalist commitment of the state of Veracruz to transition from” public instruction” to “popular education” during the 1915-1932 period. The analytical proposal that is presented here focuses on two dimensions: a historical-political and a pedagogical one, the latter being broken down under the following four axes: 1) programmatic and curricular, 2) instrumental, 3) ideological-cultural and 4) documentary.

Keywords : Pedagogical Innovation; Social Transformation; Educational Reform; Political Change.
