Abstract

NEMESIO LAGUNA, Erika Rubí  and  ARIAS VALLEJO, Adriana Margarita. Assessment of territorial vulnerability: Defining the scale of sustainable date production. The case of Laguna Salada, Mexico. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2022, vol.5, n.2, e222.  Epub Aug 14, 2023. ISSN 2594-1925.  https://doi.org/10.37636/recit.v5n2e222.

Given the aridity of the Laguna Salada territory (Mexico) and the scarcity of hydro-productive data on date cultivation in the American continent; The purpose of this research is to determine to what extent and under what conditions the date palm surface could be expanded by the Laguna Salada without violating its capacity to develop sustainably. Methodologically, it carries out an assessment of the vulnerability of the territory to achieve the objective. The results of the evaluation determine the possibility of expanding the date palm surface because the average production scale (3 hectares) is below the sustainable production scale (7 hectares). However, it is also pointed out that there is a low capacity for adaptation of the territory caused by the existence of inoperative and deficient risk management mechanisms. The most suitable area to expand the surface is the northwest of the study area.

Keywords : Vulnerability; Date production scale; Sustainability; Resilience.
