Abstract

ROJAS-CAVILLO, Antonio; LOPEZ-ZAVALA, Carlos E.; MARTINEZ-ESCALANTE, José E.  and  CALDERON-GARCIA, Lenin. Metastatic pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular glands: case report and literature review. Gac. mex. oncol. [online]. 2023, vol.22, suppl.1, pp.61-65.  Epub Sep 11, 2023. ISSN 2565-005X.  https://doi.org/10.24875/j.gamo.22000117.

Submandibular glands are involved in only 5-10% of salivary gland tumors, pleomorphic adenoma is the tumor that most commonly affects these glands. The recurrence rate after initial resection is lower in 5% of submandibular gland tumors. Metastatic pleomorphic adenoma represents 1% of cases and in less than 1% of cases pleomorphic adenomas undergo malignant transformation. The main risk factor for recurrence is incomplete surgery initially, and the female sex. Elevation of p16, cyclin D1, CDK4, E2F, and retinoblastoma protein can help assess the risk of recurrence. Surgery continues to be the mainstay of treatment. Estrogen receptors seem to be a prognostic factor and may be considered a therapeutic target.

Keywords : Metastatic pleomorphic adenoma; Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma; Pleomorphic adenoma.
