Abstract

CASTILLO BERNAL, Stephen. Media exoticism. Notes on pre-Hispanic Heavy Metal in Mexico. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.85, pp.41-72.  Epub June 05, 2023. ISSN 2448-8488.

In this article, I make some reflections about body images and performative practices of Heavy Metal bands, whom inspiration is based on prehispanic cultures of Mexico. That kind of images are used to promote themselves on the national and international metal scene. Through an ethnographical analysis with some mexican metalheads, I reflect on the images and discourses of the prehispanic world and how they had mediated through information technologies. This mediatized practices reinforce the beliefs of the millenarian movement of Mexicanity, such as the idealization of mesoamerican past and the mexica´s culture.

Keywords : Folk Metal; prehispanic world; mexicanity; performance; mediatization.
