Abstract

MENENDEZ, Eduardo L.. Journey without return, but with returns. Comments on some pre- and post-exile anthropological experiences. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.69, pp.15-31. ISSN 2448-8488.

This text adduces to a certain continuity/discontinuity in my anthropological work, due to my forced migration from Argentina to Mexico in April 1976. Firstly, I point out some of the theoretical reference frameworks and the main studies carried out in Argentina, so as to show the orientations that I later applied in Mexico in the study of health-disease processes. Secondly, I list the main research work I carried out in Mexico, as well as my main “contributions,” hereby referring to the models of attention, to the application of a relational approach that surpasses the methodology of the actor’s point of view; to the development of a socio-cultural epidemiology that includes the cultural and ideological dimensions as processes rather than as “variables,” in a similar way to anthropology based on social practices rather than on only representations, discourses, and narratives; also of note, is the fact that I intentionally search for both “differences” and “similarities,” in the hope of understanding reality as a mechanism for controlling our ethnocentrisms and racism.

Keywords : Methodology; relational approach; attention models.
