Abstract

RASHKIN, Elissa. “Recordar no es velorio”: Testimonies and Life Histories from the Veracruz Agrarian Movement. Let. hist. [online]. 2016, n.15, pp.217-245. ISSN 2448-8372.

This article explores testimonies and life histories related to the agrarian struggle in Veracruz of the 1920s and 1930s, a conflictive era known as the “radical years”. Focusing on the links between power, violence, and the written word, it analyzes the ways in which participants in the agrarian movement, who later became its chroniclers, gave form to collective memory, at times following the contours of official history, other times giving voice to what can be considered a subaltern memory whose main protagonists are the agrarian communities themselves, with their local identities, internal conflicts, and particular recollections of an especially significant era in Veracruz’s history.

Keywords : Agrarianism; testimonial literature; Veracruz history; Pino Domínguez Colorado; Porfirio Pérez Olivares.
