Abstract
AGUILAR ZAMUDIO, Ángel de Jesús. Illocutionary Force of Imperative Utterances in Tweets Addressed to Mexican Presidents. Anu. let. lingüíst. filol. [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.2, pp.119-150. Epub Oct 23, 2023. ISSN 2448-8224. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.adel.2023.11.2/00x27os135.
This study addresses the use of the imperative mood in Twitter utterances directed at Mexican presidents and other users. Imperatives, both verbal and interjective, may be part of illocutionary acts, signs of the utterer’s attitude in the face of previous interventions and discourse markers. The study also considers the possible appearance of irony in these acts and its influence on rules of adaptation. It finds that imperatives are used mainly in requests and advice, and to a lesser extent in other directive speech acts, as well as in indirect threats, disagreements, and discourse markers of contact control, and occasionally as ironic speech acts which express criticism of addressees with use of the echoic and a dissociative attitude.
