Abstract

BURGOS, María  and  GODINO, Juan D.. Emergency of proto-algebraic reasoning in proportionality tasks of primary school students. Educ. mat. [online]. 2019, vol.31, n.3, pp.117-150.  Epub June 15, 2020. ISSN 2448-8089.  https://doi.org/10.24844/em3103.05.

Proportional reasoning is often considered as an access route to early algebraic reasoning. In this paper, we show the analysis of the answers of a group of fifth grade students, who are faced for the first time with proportionality tasks, analyzing in detail the developed procedures, representations, arguments and evidences obtained about their generalization capacity. We also include the tasks used as a first encounter with proportionality applying a mixed instructional and investigative model. As a result of this study we recognize features of proto-algebraic reasoning in the activity developed by students in tasks of this type.

Keywords : Algebraic thinking; proportional reasoning; algebraization level; instructional design.
