Abstract

MARTINO, Gabriel. Translating and understanding S āṃkhya: Hermeneutical issues regarding praḳrti. Estud. Asia Áfr. [online]. 2020, vol.55, n.2, pp.415-431.  Epub Aug 14, 2020. ISSN 2448-654X.  https://doi.org/10.24201/eaa.v55i2.2573.

In this paper we examine the notion of prakṛti, a key technical term of Īśvarakṛṣṇa’s Sāṃkhya-Kārikā. Our analysis takes two complementary approaches. One of them focuses on this term’s meaning and associated concepts in their textual context, in order to understand their signification immanent in Īśvarakṛṣṇa’s treatise. This first approach limits us, however, to the Sanskrit language. The second one involves a discussion of the Spanish translations of the previously examined Sanskrit expressions. This dual strategy improves our understanding of some chief notions of the Sāṃkhya-Kāikā and reveals the difficulties of translating this classical Indian philosophical text.

Keywords : Sāṃkhya; prakṛti; avyakta; pradhāna; translation.
