Abstract

MEZCUA LOPEZ, Antonio José. Becoming Landscape: Hangzhou’s West Lake from its Origins to the Five Dynasties. Estud. Asia Áfr. [online]. 2018, vol.53, n.1, pp.5-34. ISSN 2448-654X.  https://doi.org/10.24201/eaa.v0i0.2229.

The city of Hangzhou’s West Lake is one of most important places in the cultural history of China, and yet, there is a lack of research about it in western languages. This article intends to approach the period when the West Lake took on identity as a separate “landscape”, using new interdisciplinary methodologies on landscape studies. We will review the time between the Warring States and the Five Dynasties periods, demonstrating the processes by which a certain place can take on the identity of a famous landscape in Chinese culture.

Keywords : West Lake; Hangzhou; landscape; China.
