Abstract

LOPEZ, Nadia. Factories of angels: gender and ideals of maternity in the reports of public welfare workers in Quito, 1940-1952. Hist. mex. [online]. 2024, vol.73, n.4, pp.1759-1801.  Epub Apr 22, 2024. ISSN 2448-6531.  https://doi.org/10.24201/hm.v73i4.4764.

This article analyzes discourses on the protection of children, maternity and the family that were developed in academic medical circles and their influence on the reports of social workers at the Central Board of the Quito Public Welfare Office in the nineteen forties; these reports constituted a reading of the reality of single mothers and the illegitimacy of their children through imaginaries of how mothers and married women ought to be.

Keywords : gender; protection of children; maternity; public welfare; honor; purity culture; hygienism; social work.
