Abstract

ESPARZA-MENDEZ, Rosa María et al. Relationship between planning and hypertensive treatment targets in the elderly. Sanus [online]. 2020, vol.5, n.14, e166.  Epub Feb 17, 2021. ISSN 2448-6094.  https://doi.org/10.36789/sanus.vi14.166.

Introduction:

Non-compliance with hypertensive treatment goals, promotes the early onset of cognitive impairments and affects the functionality of the elderly. One of the functions affected is planning, a component of executive functions that allows the individual to schedule tasks and make decisions.

Objective:

To determine the relation between planning and hypertensive treatment compliance goals in the elderly.

Methodology:

Descriptive-correlated design that included 52 people over the age of 60, men and women, diagnosed with systemic high blood pressure, recruited into mutual aid groups in the State of Jalisco. The Tower of London was applied and blood pressure, body mass index, total cholesterol, sodium consumption and tobacco were measured. Several measurements were made and then relationships were established between them.

Results:

Women predominated (80.8%), the median age was 70.2 years (DE -6.8) and the evolution of high blood pressure was 11.0 years ( DE-7.3) of presenting. Weak correlations (p=<.05) were identified between blood pressure and total correct movements, blood pressure and total resolution time; as well as between the body mass index and the total violation of rules.

Conclusion:

The elderly with the greatest difficulties in planning were the ones who had the greatest non-compliance with hypertensive treatment and specifically with body mass index, so nursing professionals must link efforts to strengthen strategies that support the elderly in lifestyle modification.
