Abstract

ALVAREZ ROMERO, Ana Lourdes. The realistic effect of Latin American colloquial poetry. Connotas. Rev. crit. teór. lit. [online]. 2022, n.25, pp.122-148.  Epub June 02, 2023. ISSN 2448-6019.  https://doi.org/10.36798/critlit.v0i25.424.

This article shows the links between the realistic effect of Latin American colloquial poetry of the second half of the 20th century and its political and aesthetic context. To carry this out, the categorizations of this poetics proposed by three of its most representative authors and theorists are taken as a starting point: Roberto Fernández Retamar (1930-2019), Mario Benedetti (1920-2009) and José Emilio Pacheco (1939-2014). From the systematization of their approaches and the review of the criticism around them, the characteristics of colloquial poetry are pointed out as the cause of a realistic effect, instead of considering the latter as an autonomous and unconnected feature. In this sense, the realism of colloquial poetry is conceptualized as a response to the predecessor stylistic context, the avant-garde, and as a response to the Latin American political context around the Cuban Revolution.

Keywords : Realism; Latin American poetry; avant-garde; Cuban revolution.
