Abstract

HERNANDEZ MEDINA, Sergio Miguel. The juxtaposition of plurality and concentration in the Western print media. Inter disciplina [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.29, pp.265-287.  Epub June 26, 2023. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2023.29.84491.

This article on the written media presents a theoretical reflection on the confrontation between two ways of conceiving freedom of expression, from a political economy approach. On the one hand, the liberal democracy that advocates a freedom of media for the benefit of society and on the other, capitalist democracy, where media companies form a network of global interests with economic purposes. The situation that the press goes through in the different western countries in Europe, the United States and Latin America brings with it a series of characteristics that unite them, where the plurality of media as a democratic value faces media concentration as economic empowerment.

Keywords : pluralism; concentration; media; press; capitalism.
