Abstract

BREITENBACH, Raquel; CORAZZA, Graziela  and  DEBASTIANI, Lucas. Family succession in agriculture: international scenario. Inter disciplina [online]. 2021, vol.9, n.25, pp.115-138.  Epub Nov 22, 2021. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2021.25.79969.

One of the alternatives that the rural youth has been adopting is the migration to the urban environment, seeking different conditions of life, study and work. As a result of this migratory process, among other factors, there is the difficulty of family succession in the countryside. The Brazilian scenario of family succession in agriculture has been explored in academic research, which shows a pessimistic outlook. In the rest of the world can the same concerns about rural succession exist in Brazil? This paper investigates the current situation of rural family succession from an international perspective. We sought to identify: patterns of the problem of rural succession in the world; gender issues in the succession process; countries and situations that have minimized succession difficulties. Methodologically, a theoretical essay was conducted, based on the literature review, using reference manager. It was found that the problem of family succession in agriculture is present in several nations, to a greater or lesser extent, as well as gender differentiation, prioritizing man in the succession process. The theme is also part of public policy discussions around the world, worrying farmers, academics and the state. In Europe, public policies support succession processes in agriculture.

Keywords : Rural-urban migration; rural youth; gender in the countryside; family farming; global generational transfer.
