Abstract

THEODORE, Florence L.; BLANCO-GARCIA, Ilian  and  JUAREZ-RAMIREZ, Clara. Why do we drink so much carbonated soft drink in Mexico? An approach from the interdisciplinary. Inter disciplina [online]. 2019, vol.7, n.19, pp.19-45.  Epub Jan 25, 2021. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2019.19.70286.

The soft drink (soda) has become in Mexico a very present drink in daily life and festivities with a maximum per capita consumption of 139.9 liters in 2012. These levels of consumption, ones of the highest in the world, damage health and are associated with obesity and non-communicable chronic diseases such as diabetes. They prejudice the family economy and the health sector by addressing the emergence of these diseases and also the environment through. The production of soft drinks requires intensive extraction of water from the subsoil, damaging the groundwater table and its surroundings. How we got in Mexico to this high level of consumption of soft drinks that generates health problem and killing the population?.

Reviewing the scientific literature of different academic disciplines, we will place at the center of our analysis the theoretical approach of Sidney Mintz, as a guide to understand some of the most relevant social, economic and political events that favored the massive incorporation of this beverage, to the scenario of Mexican food culture. We argue that it is not fortuitous that, Mexico is one of the countries in the world with the highest levels of consumption of soft drinks and for this, we needed to review history.
